Complete setup of an App-V infrastructure as part of the migration to Windows 10

As part of the migration to the Windows 10 operating system, the City of Kaufbeuren has successfully made the technology transition from VMware ThinApp to Microsoft App-V. Raynet’s versatile solutions have supported the associated establishment of a new App-V infrastructure and ensured that the IT operations of the City of Kaufbeuren are secured for the future.

The customer
With a population of around 46,000, the City of Kaufbeuren is the fourth-largest city in the administrative district of Swabia and is located on the northeastern edge of the Bavarian Allgäu region. Around 850 employees in nearly 30 departments, in turn distributed among various subject areas, ensure the permanent maintenance of city life and citizens’ interests.

The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) department of the City of Kaufbeuren provides secure and reliable IT operations for all employees. Its responsibilities extend far beyond the core administration and also include public baths, libraries, museums, the fire department, the waste disposal office, and the waterworks. A total of around 250 different specialist applications are required in all departments to perform daily tasks.

The challenge
In order to be able to manage the large number of different applications and the associated requirements of the IT department on a daily basis, standardized processes are necessary. Users therefore do not install the required software manually and locally – instead, all workstations are managed centrally via a software deployment solution.

The migration from Windows 7 to Windows 10 was accompanied, among other things, by a repackaging of all software applications. The complete migration of the entire infrastructure entailed a technology change from VMware ThinApp to Microsoft App-V.

"Our previous packaging approach has been efficient and consistent, so software packages were deployed directly to different platforms, such as Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7 x86. The strategy of virtualizing the different specialist applications should also be maintained in the future."

Stefan Mayer, Group Manager Front-End Infrastructure of the City of Kaufbeuren

Within the scope of a public tender, the City of Kaufbeuren was looking for a reliable partner for this extensive project. Due to the innovative concepts and exemplary elaboration of the processes, the contract was awarded to the software manufacturer Raynet, who convinced with market-leading solutions and as a managed service provider.

The solution and customer benefits
To meet this challenge completely, a comprehensive deployment strategy was first developed, including the establishment of processes based on App-V, and the necessary infrastructure was designed and built. In addition, nearly 110 software packages were migrated and repackaged in App-V format.

Raynet offers various operating models for software packaging. The proven mixed operation, which combines both on-site and remote packaging, offers the highest level of efficiency.

"Our packaging factory and the associated solutions RayFlow and RayPack Studio provide a convenient and time-saving way to outsource the entire packaging process, from evaluation to packaging and quality assurance. On this professional basis, all software packages were fully documented and delivered on target and on time in compliance with all requirements and prerequisites."

Ragip Aydin, Managing Director of Raynet

A customized App-V training by Raynet’s training and certification center RayAcademy has successfully trained the employees of the Information and Communication Technologies department in the use of Microsoft App-V as well as the Raynet solutions.

The conclusion
Thanks to the uncomplicated project communication and the goal-oriented approach, the complete set-up of the App-V infrastructure within the scope of the Windows 10 migration, including the creation of the software packages for the new target system, as well as the successful know-how build-up of the City of Kaufbeuren team, could be successfully implemented within the pre-prepared project plan.

"Raynet's know-how has convinced us all along the line. We are sure to have found in Raynet not only a reliable partner for our Windows 10 project, but also for a future cooperation. Thanks to the multi-stage training concept and the packaging process tailored to our needs, we are now able to manage all specialist applications efficiently and, in a time,-saving manner."
